HEALTH ALERT: U.S. Embassy, Luanda

Location: Angola (countrywide)

Event: The Angolan Ministry of Health has confirmed 19 cases of COVID-19 in Angola.

Information on repatriation flights departing Luanda:

Angolan borders remain closed and there are very few flights departing.  The embassy strongly urges those who wish to return to the United States to leave at the first opportunity.  We cannot predict future flight availability if you choose to wait, and we do not know when normal commercial airline service will resume in Angola.  Understand that repatriation flights are not free-of-charge and are, in fact, frequently more expensive than commercial travel.

The below list represents private travel agencies offering repatriation flights to Europe.  The Embassy is making this list available to help our citizens who are interested in returning to the U.S.; we do not endorse any of the companies on this list.  U.S. citizens interested in leaving Angola can contact these companies directly for more information or for ticketing.  The Embassy cannot assist with ticketing, although repatriation loans may be available for U.S. citizens who do not have the funds to purchase their tickets.  Please note that due to travel restrictions and limited availability of connecting flights, passengers should purchase their onward connecting flights to the U.S. prior to departing Angola.

Current Status of Passport Applications for Overseas Posts:

Because of public health measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, effective March 20, 2020, the U.S Department of State began limiting its passport operations.  Effective April 2, the Department of State has further limited our ability to offer routine passport and citizenship services overseas. If you have previously applied for a passport, you should expect significant delays receiving your passport.

In an emergency, the U.S. Embassy, Luanda can assist with an emergency passport for an adult or a minor.  Please consider waiting to apply until we resume normal operations.

Angolan visa extensions:

According to the Angolan Ministry of Interior all tourism, short-term, and border visas are automatically extended through May 15.  Work visas, resident permits, temporary stay visas, and refugee passes are extended through May 30, including for foreign nationals who are currently outside of Angola.
